We celebrated at JG Melon's, our usual dining spot. It's the only place that has been able to convince me - over and over again - how amazing burgers are ("really? I thought you were a vegetarian!")

swarthmore is amazing, i had a great time at the admitted students overnight thing. i hung out with 3 other people most of the time- a guy from kansas, a girl from long island, and a guy from switzerland. awesome crowd. exactly the kind of people i want to go to college with. why am i still in high school?
just tried on my prom dress, it still fits & looks awesome, and i still have the shoes, and they still fit. i'm good to go. we just need to figure out post-prom plans, and i'm all set.
CIT reunion was tres tres excellent, only nine of us were there but it was a great group - me, johnny, derek, stephen, michaela, rachel, david k (who was hosting), david p, dan gutterman. late-night campfire on the beach w/ smores is my new favorite spring/summer activity. camp is going to be much too cool this year. more along camp lines: sarah gomer comes to NYC this friday, and i babysit mickey and laura's kids on saturday (surprising, but true).
ballroom dancing is probably the greatest gym class ever. i was cha-cha-ing around my room on sunday night while i was supposed to be playing the noseflute for mr. dreyfus's project. physics of music, there's a good class too.
second term has been quite good to me.

...I'M GOING TO SWARTHMORE!!
yay!
unfortunately, i am currently unable to celebrate, as some sort of illness has been sending my system for loop today. i was really sick and feeling terrible and my mom came in and gave me a huge envelope and on the back it said in little letters "this is the FAT one!" and i couldnt even smile 'cause i was so sick. yuck. but more celebrations on friday, when hopefully i'll be back in school again.

hi all, long time no see
in past news, sarah gomer came and stayed for the weekend! her plane got snowed in (this was the weekend of the fabulous snowstorm). we hung out, went to peanut butter & co., had a tea party with fancy cookies & watched crash (tres sad, tres good), met up with james and andy for beer and pool on saturday night, then went sledding on sunday. then i finally finished my print exchange. that thing was due in november. i'm totally on time with stuff, i swear.
fabulous news! :
binghamton honors UMass honors geneseo ALFRED COLLEGE OF CERAMICS! (Buck's Rock College, here i come) + presidential scholarship
ok ok, so they're mostly safe schools (except alfred), but still. i'm going to college. my mom and i drank amaretto and watched SO MUCH horatio hornblower (we're sailing adventure dorks, but we're awesome like that) in celebration.
SING! is coming along slowly, but fabulously. i just finished mairead's dress, and its so good. how good? SOOO GOOD. i think its safe to say its more like a gown than a dress. i just need to add tail fins and catfish thingies, then it'll look more like a fish gown. now i have to turn becky cooper into a starfish, and naomi & emily into a three-legged (three-tailed?) mutant fish. so good.
lalalala i'm going to college. i hear from UVM tomorrow, and everywhere else on april 1st.

the minute my alfred essay is done (yes, that's the college of ceramics at alfred university, all you BRers would be proud), i will be a true second term senior.
1 free (aka sleeping late) 2 women's voices, with ms thoms. i think this will wind up being my favorite class, though physics of music might take a close second. 3 ballroom dancing! 4 AP Comp. Gov with mr polazzo 5 free again! 6 lunch! 7 economics? mr waxman? what is going on? 8 physics of music! with the fantastic mr dreyfus, tamara, dan, john, katie, and lu! 9 math 10 spec! (to be dropped within a month or so)
applying to colleges.....check. awesome schedule.........check. concerts all the time....check. warm weather........shouldnt be checked yet, but it is. seeing summer and far-away friends all the time...check. getting really into cooking, which is both cheap and fun....check. 18 years old............check. i just did the go-get-a-thrill-by-buying-cigarettes-for-your-underage-friends thing, and honestly, it wasnt as thrilling as it should've been. but i can vote, which is kinda neat. finally not caring about how messy my room is......check.
ooh good days ahead. ooh good days.

happy birthday to me happy birthday to me!
pizza & sundaes at my house was nice, though somewhat awkward, considering that half the group wouldnt talk to the other 'cause they were too stoned to be properly sociable until they sobered up after the movie. after seeing walk the line i stopped by at julia giddy's party and said hello - i havent seen her in so long and it was really great to see her + some of the delta crowd again. nicky andy james and i walked down to my house, i opened presents (for those who came: thank you so much, i loved everything!), and james and i listened to chopin's nocturnes, which were gorgeous.

alrightey let's get through this sucker
deferred from swarthmore. now applying to UVM, UMass, Wesleyan, Haverford, Middlebury, and some SUNYs (Alfred among them, for all you ceramo/glass folk out there). almost done, too...i just have to label and send my portfolio stuffs to haverford, wesleyan, alfred, and middlebury, and write haverford's essay. not bad for 4 days before most of those deadlines.
is it bad that i really enjoyed the transit strike? i had the coolest carpool group ever: ben wexler, saskia, and kavitha, with kavitha's dad driving. meanwhile, jake scooted to school, for which i gave him a round of applause.
applied to be a JC! letters in mid-january
performed at el taller last week, which was fabulous - i met/heard some amazing musicians, and they all liked my pieces too. and everything was in spanish, and heather came to see me, and we loved being bilingual for the evening.
christmas in the athiest household: big apple circus, rent, presents (lots of $$ for a shopping spree, a leatherman (!!), excellent mixes from maxine and mairead, fuzzy socks, gorgeous skirt, a book of mark twain's essays, johnny cash CD, the people's history of science, a new desk lamp, and the complete works of sherlock holmes!)
cleaned my room yesterday! when its clean, its like i have a dance floor in there. good stuff.
anthro paper, late xmas gifts, print exchange, and ceramics stuff to catch up on
james is hosting a party on thursday. i have to convince my mom to let me go, which shouldn't be too difficult.
birthday planning: possibly ethiopian food and movies? i cant think of anything particularly spectacular. which is kindof pathetic, i guess. it'll be my 18th too. ideas, anyone?

ok ok i'm gonna tell you a story its about all the awesome people i saw after school today. it was a fabulous afternoon. here goes:
-the spec editorial board, flying down the escalators! and then everyone on the senior bar, doing the same. for all you non-stuy folk, we all stood at the top of the stationary 2/4 escalator until it started to move faster and faster with all of our weight and everyone screamed. so much fun. -jonah einstein, who was walking in the opposite direction and tapped me to say hello. it was nice, though a little startling, 'cause i haven't talked to him in forever and didn't expect to see him. i think we have the same shoes. (or had? i'm not sure if he still wears them) -sam. we walked around chatting for a while. very amusing. good times. i think he's one of very few people i never feel bad about making fun of, mostly because he can be mean enough to make up for it. but i dont think he ever means what he says wholeheartedly. -piyali, who i saw only briefly on the sidewalk & the subway platform, but is awesome anyway. -ms. nolen. we took the train uptown and talked about recs and cartooning and why calculus and polar form dont mix and how mr. stern is brilliant. i love ms. nolen, as does the entire school. -ian macleod! ohh, gorgeous art school college boys...i've always been warned to stay away from those. oh dear.
and, to top it all off, i'm listening to doug's CD from camp, which is amazing and beautiful.

its been a while, figured i'd write
sometimes i wonder why i'm not a deadhead, they're awesome. my mom and i danced around to it while she did cartooning stuff and i ironed my CIT shirt. that shirt makes me laugh...we have to put a copy of it in the 05 to 06 time capsule. along with reminders of all the lists that shouldn't be done at 5am. and empty martinelli bottles. ahahahahaaaa.
lots of camp folk are at Louie's show at the magnet right now, but i'm to exhausted from speaking spanish all morning (ok, fine, it was 1:30 in the afternoon, but i had just woken up) at el taller and then running errands and working all afternoon. the guy teaching me at el taller is so awesome, very wise and an excellent teacher. he explained to me that english is a very rigid language, while spanish is more like a jam session. you learn sound before you learn meaning. he's trying to get the "gringa computer" in my head to stop making spanish rigid. not that i think in english, i just translate without room for changing up structures, which is allowed in spanish. he said i repeated sounds really well, so he asked if i was a musician, 'cause he said i listen like a musician. it turns out he plays music too, and we're doing a CD exchange. neat. we talked about a million things just to get me back into the swing of speaking spanish, which i havent really done in conversation in months. i also learned that the gorgeous guy who answered the door to the studio and showed me around was his son. i forget the son's name, but he complimented me on my speaking skills. yay! i have some lorca to read for next week. good stuff.
so it turns out i'm not going to middlebury and UVM tomorrow, but i'm going later in october. all the better, 'cause i have a ton of work to do with anthro make-up stuff (tremendous train delay yesterday morning got me to school an hour late) and annotating the constitution for gov. i'm supposed to visit amy at alfred with luke sometime in october too, which is gonna be too much fun. i miss amy and the glass staff, they're all just awesome combos of talent, delinquent, spontaneity, and college kid.
i remember when amy took me out to dinner with cat karen rose kellie and the glass folk for cat's birthday...we were in amy's car and all the counselors started smoking, and they weren't sure if they were allowed to around me. i told them i didnt mind, and kellie was like, whatever, we're off camp grounds anyway. and then karen said "fuck it, you may be a CIT, but you're past the no smoking sign. do YOU want a cigarette?" i think amy nearly forgot to turn when she looked back to see my reaction. they were all a little hesitant to talk about all the stuff that goes on when all the counselors go out "bowling" on saturdays, and amy and i laughed a lot 'cause she knew i was completely aware of what goes on. silly counselors.
speaking of interesting/cool/strange groups of people, i recently learned how the speechies work. they all sit in a circle while a novice gives his speech, and then they throw shoes at him when he's done. then they swear and yell at him for a while until he refuses to hug them at the end. and they laugh between everything. i had no idea what was going on, but joey filled me in. you learn something new every day.
mmm bedtime. lots of bedtime. nite all.
PS - if anyone was at the march on DC today, please tell me how it was, i really wanted to go but couldn't 'cause of my class. there are usually some really good signs and art stuff at anti-bush marches.
PPS - got my show space secured for ridgewood crafts show, nov. '06! yay mass production!
PPPS - in the past few weeks, i have watched pinnochio, bedknobs & broomsticks, 101 dalmatians, singin' in the rain, babe, and the muppet movie. i'm on a roll. let's hope my work doesnt start picking up and i can get away with keeping it going.
Kermit and Fozzie are driving and see big bird walking along the road. they pull over. Kermit: Hey there, want a lift? we're going to hollywood to become rich and famous! Big Bird: No thanks, I'm on my way to New York City to try and break into public television!
ahahhahhahahaha

but everyone write to me!
Nicole Singer (CIT) Buck's Rock Camp 59 Buck's Rock Road New Milford, CT 06776
i leave on tuesday, and i'll be back in mid august...i forget the date. but immediately afterwards i'm going to fire island and then to frost valley, leaving frost valley early to visit university of vermont, middlebury, and wesleyan.
summer should be good - my shop is all-new again, which i'm hoping will work out better than it did last summer. adam is back (the beloved ceramics shop head for 10 years), but hes in....sewing? yeah, interesting switch. but what else were you to expect from someone who spent most of their time knitting a 6' by 6' blanket (with knitting needles like drumsticks) and making 3D quilts? silly adam. i'm bunking in the OCTAGON (!) with mimi and carly and...i dont know who else! i dont know too many of the new girl CITs. come to think of it, i dont know too many of the guy CITs either, really...i'm only friends with trotta and krinick, and i sorta know sam. it'll be one of those meet-new-people-all-the-time-everywhere summers. good stuff. and i think there'll be lots of hanging out with the JCs, since a lot of my CIT friends became JCs (sarah, anna, dana, (is julia coming back? i cant remember)etc). and of course lauren.
i went to the friends of buck's rock meeting last week and max yeston was there. he thought i was a) some counselor alumnus not at buck's rock anymore and b) older than he was. i laughed. he had no idea who i was. very amusing. we talked a little in the meeting, he seemed nice after he got over being startled.
AND last few days: physics regents spec dinner shopping for camp mark twain play with dad guitar lesson abe & nicole day avenue Q lunch with little sib other plans for sunday night/monday yet to be determined. and then some more packing and camp.

so memorial day weekend.
friday with lili: chatting, martinelli's, hot dogs, west end, boat basin, rain, wind, sun. also, asa being gross and mark being charming as usual.
friday with dad: we finally figured out how to re-wire his turntable, and we danced around and played air guitar and sang as we listened to the rolling stones and bob dylan and the cadillacs and jefferson airplane and all sorts of other excellent things until we realized that i was an hour late for returning to my mom's house.
philadelphia: shopping, Spanglish (which was muchmuch better than the trailers make it look), dinner, Philadelphia Museum of Art with a lack of Dali (it was full), but the gift shop made up for it by over-surrealism-ing itself. also at the museum, i realized how much i like impressionism and how calm it makes me feel. very nice. i also realized how much my mother hates modern art. she did not approve of my fascination with the chairs made of like 16 different mediums (including string, corrugated cardboard, and lace that stood on its own somehow, i couldnt figure it out). afterwards, i got an awesome book of photos involving art studio furniture, dali, three cats, and a bucket of water...all flying through the air. it took them 26 tries to get that photo. poor cats.
more on shopping: jeans, tops, a pretty wooden box, and a GORGEOUS PINK DRESS. though it is not as...erm...festive (or nearly as frilly) as hannah's cake dress, it is amazing and shimmery and flowy and made for nicole. i glow. i am such a girl.
this dress shall be my junior prom dress. it should be fun, though nobody i know is going, which could pose some problems. everyone, especially dan, is very anti-prom. i am usually anti-prom too, but i couldnt help myself this time. dancing+food+prettydress shall spice up an otherwise boring friday night.
AND the day after, going upstate for graduation party goodness will spice up an otherwise boring weekend! yay! and dylan, the clearwater festival is that saturday too. we should take a field trip (yes. with everyone.) - its where i picked up contact :)
PS - Mairead, we have to do that thing again where you read and i draw. i realized that that was one of the more exciting creative moments of my life. maybe i'll become a caliper groupie, but i'll just sit and listen and draw what everyone writes.
